Illinois Transportation Official Arrested for DUI, Keeps Job

An Illinois Department of Transportation (DOT) official who represented the department at safe driving events was arrested for driving under the influence in late November and is still at his job.

Carl Iacullo was arrested on November 20th in Wood Dale and charged with two counts of driving under the influence, improper lane usage, and operating an uninsured motor vehicle, reports the Chicago Tribune.

The 58-year-old DOT official was stopped shortly after midnight while driving east on Irving Park Road. Following the stop, Iacullo reportedly showed poor balance and had red, glassy, bloodshot eyes, reports the Tribune. His blood-alcohol level was .098.

While Iacullo has not yet been convicted of the offense, some are questioning how the DOT official who advocates for safe driving is still allowed to remain on the job.

The DOT said that it takes drinking and driving very seriously, and that discipline (such as suspensions or terminations) depends upon the circumstances of each offense and if the person is convicted.

So Iacullo's DUI may eventually cost him his job, but that probably won't happen unless he's convicted. In addition, as Carl Iacullo was arrested for a DUI while driving without car insurance, the official could also face an aggravated DUI charge and jail time.

If you've been arrested for a DUI, you should know that you are innocent until proven guilty. So even if you blew a 0.09 on a Breathlyzer, this does not automatically mean you'll receive a conviction.

However, you should also know that in the employment setting, there is no requirement that you be proven guilty before you're punished. Many employers can fire an employee simply for getting arrested.
